Job description:
General Role Purpose (brief description of this job)
Provide support in occupational health and safety (OHS) prgrams, initiatives and other requirements
Qualifications (required for job) & Knowledge & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or equivalent
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in safety role.
- Experience in sample preparation.
- Experience of occupational health monitoring
- Experience of specifying PPE by application
- Exposure to a mining environment highly regarded
- Will occasionally work at heights, climb ladders, stairways, and work off of platforms. Will use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.
- Employee will be required to adhere to considerable amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting. May be required to lift, carry, and move up to 50 lbs. Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull: objects, materials, controls and tools.
- Bi-lingual Spanish and English preferred
- Must have valid Panamanian driving licence.
- Must be computer literate
Core Specific Responsibilities & Expected Deliverables
- Support the selection and use of equipment and processes that reduce the exposure to illness and injury within the occupational environment at Cobre Panama.
- Promote awareness of the occupational environment and potential adverse health effects through programs and education and training of managers and employees
- Support workers to comply with legislation and meet company expectations.
- Provide managers and workers with information and strategies for reduction of exposure to occupational hazards and education programs to support legislative and site requirement, particularly work safety.
- Identify, assess and control health hazards in the workplace and recommend and develop site specific programs that are approved by Senior Management. Specifically, (but not limited to) for: Airborne Contaminant such as Fibrous Materials, Noise, Vibration (HAVS/Whole Body), Chemical (such as VOC’s, Hydrocarbons), Thermal Stress, Illumination, Ergonomics, Local Exhaust Ventilation (unless Ventilation officer is appointed)
- Implementation of new health and hygiene initiatives and processes in coordination with the internal Clinic.
- Undertake workplace surveys and evaluate situations in the workplace and assess the associated health risks. Develop and implement accurate measuring and sampling programs with the necessary equipment and develop the necessary record keeping system.
- Find cost-effective solutions to risks to health in workplaces and recommending solutions or control methods;
- Compile data, write reports, and present required training to develop site employees
- Write practical and cost effective guidance information on occupational health issues with consultation with internal Clinic.
- Develop guidelines and strategies for the management of occupational disease and disability
- Develop quality control mechanisms for occupational health monitoring activities
- Develop monitoring and evaluation strategies for occupational health program.
- Perform related work as required.

Operational Requirements
Cobre Panama is a remote site. This exciting position is based on-site and will be focusing on driving and delivering operational accountability and ownership across various units at Cobre Panama site. Rosters and working hours may vary depending on business requirements.
Environmental Responsibilities
- Comply with current environmental regulations in Panama
- Comply with the commitments contained in the Environmental Impact Studies and other additional studies in this regard, which apply to your area and activities.
- Comply with the provisions of the Minera Panama Environmental Management System.
