Mō te tūnga | About the role
The purpose of Te Tari Pūreke, Firearms Safety Authority business unit is to enable New Zealand to be a world leader in arms safety through an effective regulatory and administrative approach to the Arms Act and Arms Regulations. Established to lead, operate, and develop investment in modernisation of the firearms system, which will result in a more efficient and effective risk-based licensing system, and shall improve public confidence in the firearms licensing system. The modernisation of the Arms Regulatory System will take every opportunity to prevent harm through transparent, high quality, consistent, legislatively correct, and effective regulatory activities. This will also cover world leading administration, education, and promotion of compliance within the provisions of the Arms Act and Arms Regulations.

To support the delivery of these outcomes you will provide analysis, advice and develop business intelligence capability. Specifically, contributing to the development and monitoring of organisational performance for Police by creating, analysing, and reporting quantitative information relating to district, service centre and national performance. You will be able to think critically about the data, adding value by appropriately conveying context and related factors to provide decision makers with insight and foresight.

You will contribute to the development, monitoring and maintenance of data-sets used for both internal and externally released information. You will also undertake analysis and reporting of information by the extraction and interpretation of data from various sources, applying rules that give meaning to data and mitigate limitations in source data, and testing resultant data-sets and measures to ensure quality. You will work collaboratively and seamlessly with others in multi-disciplinary teams and specific project teams across the group to deliver integrated, high quality and innovative work.

Takohanga Matua | Key Accountabilities:
  • Proactively apply analytical thinking skills and insight to the analysis of policing issues; in particular, identifies significant patterns and changes in trends, and investigates these by analysing data and by communicating with relevant business groups, including districts and national groups.
  • Develop and maintain high quality ‘intelligent’ data sets that mitigate data quality limitations in source systems, and thereby enable effective and trusted statistical information, performance measures, and reporting.
  • Ensure reporting is timely, robust and meets the business need.
  • Assess customer needs, identifies issues and implements appropriate strategies. Ensure all service requests and complaints are met with a professional, customer focused and timely response.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-agency team within a dynamic environment.

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Applicants need to be New Zealand Permanent Residents
  • A strong working knowledge of Excel, NIA and Business Objects would be advantageous
  • Experience in call-centre performance would be helpful

Pre-Employment Checks:
  • Standard Police vetting check
  • Drug and Alcohol testing

Skills:
  • Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to make sound decisions and judgement
  • Manage time, priorities and responsibilities for self and others
  • Sound written and oral communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of analysing statistical information and developing statistical data sets.
  • Sound experience analysing statistical information within an operational environment would be an advantage.
  • Have knowledge of SAS, NIA and Business Objects within the Police network
  • Ability to seek clarity about outcomes and activities we are expected to deliver.

You will be based at either Rugby House, Wellington, with working from home options available for the preferred candidate. Positions also have flexible employment options.

We will ask you questions based on “How we will deliver Our Business – Core Competencies” and the appropriate role level.
Skills testing may be used at interview to assess data analysis and critical thinking abilities.
